Legal Advice and Representation for women asylum seekers and refugees

The Women and Children's Department provides initial advice and, where appropriate, applications and representations to the Home Office.  Women will be seen by a women solicitor or case worker and a female interpreter.

The Women's Unit's services include:

  • Advice on applications for asylum where appropriate.
  • Where domestic abuse has taken place in the UK, advice on immigration law and referral to someone to help with housing and support.
  • Where sexual abuse has taken place in the UK, advice on immigration law and referral to someone to help with support.
  • Representation at all stages of the appeal process for asylum applications.
  • Advice with other solicitors in LSA on housing, financial support, employment rights and Criminal Injuries Compensation.
  • The development of a database on country information with particular emphasis on female genital mutilation, medical and counselling services for women who have been raped in war.
  • Instructing medical reports from other appropriate bodies such as Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture.
